I am a walks leader for White Cliffs Ramblers and on Tuesday 5 August 2025 I led a group of 27 walkers along two PROW that you managed to get reinstated. I thought you may be interested in an update on them.
When the group walked across Knowlton Park on PROW EE487 we were challenged by a representative of Knowlton Court claiming that it was not a PROW. After offering to show them the map with the footpath shown on it, they declined to look at it and changed the subject.
Currently there are several obstructions on this footpath which include two iron gates locked by a chain and one iron fence, which the group climbed over. The walking group have been to contact KCC regarding these obstacles.
Kent County Council been aware of these issues and state that they trying to resolve them with the landowner, although this has now been going on for over four years.
I have to say that EE487 is an excellent addition to the PROW network where walkers do not have to use the busy and fast Sandwich Road to link up with PROW EE488 and EE260.
Regarding EE488 which the group walked from Knowlton Court to Pike Road I am told by two members of the group that this path is much improved over the last few years as the Black Lane section was unwalkable, and they had to walk in fields where one of them had been challenged by the owner of Knowlton Court.
The route is now clearly marked with gates installed and KCC employ contractors to cut this PROW twice a year from the Black Lane to Pike Road.
I look forward to any other “Lost Paths” you may be able to find and add to the PROW network in this part of East Kent.

EE487 was a bit of a bonus arising from the Black Lane research. It probably was missed off the Goodnestone parish map owing to pressure from the Knowlton estate (Knowlton had merged with Goodnestone by that time). It’s always been relatively easy to follow, albeit with the odd gate to climb. There’s no excuse for it still being obstructed after five years since the DMMO was confirmed, because the estate has only to unlock the gates. However, KCC has done nothing to reopen ‘new’ acquisitions since Black Lane, owing to resourcing difficulties.
As for Black Lane, glad you enjoyed it. Unfortunately, the mares’ field (at the Knowlton end) remains a discouragement for horse riders.
